Modern Day Icarus

Sometimes I wonder
Whether I try too hard.
Momma always said that
If I tried hard enough
I'd someday reach the sky.
But, if I fly too high,
The wings that carry me
Will burn
And crumble
Into ash.
I'll fall and
Leave a trail of light a mile long
And never come back to earth
Because who wants to return
To this world of grey?
And even if I fall,
I'll go down in light
To finally burn away
The darkness that resides
Where my heart once was.

I'm a modern day Icarus
Who goes to meet her fate
With a purpose.
